Just perfect in St. Lucia

Katie and Robert's Honeymoon in St. Lucia

We’re not really sure what’s cuter, Katie and Robert Haines’ photos from their St. Lucia honeymoon or the story of how they met. She tells us it was at the Jacksonville, Florida, ad agency where they both work. She had a crush on him that very first day on the job, but it would take them almost a year to really start to chat. But once they made a connection, the sparks flew and eight months later, they were walking down the aisle in Jacksonville. As Katie says, “When it’s right, it’s right! We just knew.”

She says, “We had talked about Hawaii, but it was just so expensive, both the airfare and the lodging. We knew we wanted a warm, tropical beach vacation. And we didn’t need to sightsee or do a whole lot.” But she was also adamant of staying away from what she calls “the honeymoon mill of all-inclusive resorts.”

Katie turned to the internet for help and kept noticing Ti Kaye Village Resort (above) in St. Lucia pop up. There were so many great reviews, that at first she thought, “ this sounds too good to be true.” Some more research online and a glance at the resort’s website and Katie and Robert were saying, “This is perfect for us!”

These two describe their May trip as “romantic, relaxing and indulgent.” They had a good mix of chilling out and getting out to explore the island. Check back all this week to read about their experiences at Ti Kaye and around St. Lucia.

Sunday Evening Post #27

new car

We’d like to introduce the newest member of our family… our new car! It’s a cute little Honda Insight. We picked it up Saturday morning and spent the weekend cruising around Jersey. The highlight was a day trip to Sandy Hook, complete with a picnic on the beach. Expect to see some more great day trips in the near future…

And check in all this week for a great honeymoon to St. Lucia that has some sweet photos of a heavenly and relaxing resort.

Necessary Linkage 05.13.10

RH Note: Necessary Linkage is a semi-weekly collection of current and helpful tidbits from around the internets, curated by the lovely Marissa Hussey, whose honeymoon was one of our first features.

Up, Up and Away
So, Up was awesome. Awards, accolades, blah blah. But you know how sometimes homages blow the originals out of the water? That’s what’s going on with this engagement portrait session based on the movie on WeddingChicks.com, in my opinion. This is one of the most heart-warming, awesome things I’ve seen in a long time.

I Think We’re Alone Now
When you envision your honeymoon, do you think of a secluded, private island for just the two of you? Attended by a small staff of one or two people, in a pristine home, not bothered by any loud entertainment crew, teenagers on Spring break, or crying toddlers? Then look no further. The Times offers 25 options for you to spend your first moments as newlyweds completely and totally alone. And yes, you read those prices correctly. They’re actually affordable.

Travel FAILS
How can I best describe TitanicAwards.com? We all hope our honeymoons don’t suffer from a single moment that would end up featured on it. Interesting and amusing, this site highlights some notable folks in the travel industry, and asks them to divulge the worst things they’ve ever experienced while traveling. Some are much less glamorous than others, like Carl Hoffman’s (author of The Lunatic Express) LA-to-DC trip on a Greyhound bus.

Dropping Knol
Consider my mind officially blown. The Open Source Photography Guides home on blogger is the portal to photography guides in locations all over the world. The guides are written by photographers on Google’s Knol, which seems to be Google’s response to About.com. Pick your destination, and read up on what kind of natural light and conditions you can expect, or which precise spot allows for the most expansive views, from someone’s firsthand experience.

Time Travel
I swear I don’t try to find things about Harry Potter. They just fall in my lap. I started reading this New York Times article about the history of Baedeker guides, and what using a guide written 100 years ago translates to in travel today. And it just happened to include mention of the Hogwarts train tracks. What can I say?

Epic Trunk Bay on Saint John, USVI

RH note: This week we’re happy to feature posts by Andy and Shaira, who honeymooned on the beautiful Caribbean island of St. John in August.

Andy & Shaira - St. John

Andy says: A particularly worthy destination – not to be missed under any circumstances in fact – is Trunk Bay, named by Condé Nast magazine and National Geographic as among the world’s most beautiful beaches. This crescent -shaped swath of white sand and transparent, azure water will bring out the inner Jacques Cousteau in even the most virulent land-lubber. One can literally see the tropical fish swimming amongst the coral from the beach and there is a one-a-kind underwater nature trail designed to be followed via snorkel.

The water here, as with most of the island, is calm and free of strong currents meaning that even novice snorkelers can focus on the incredible views (though life guards are stationed there as well). One can lose track of time in this underwater portion of the national park (a warning: I emerged after several hours in the water, having been so taken by the scenery that I failed to notice a very serious sunburn which formed on the small of my back after swimming face down for so long).

In the end, the only problem with St. John for us was that we didn’t get to see everything. In many ways, this trip just scratched the surface. There are many miles of trails, and many unspoiled beaches, most of which are only accessible with a combination of hiking and a rented car (we lacked the latter, and cabs are only practical for half the island). To sum it up, from what I know about a lot of the Caribbean,  if you haven’t been to Saint John yet, you won’t be disappointed, but once you do go, you are likely to be spoiled.

RH note, again: Many, many thanks for Andy and Shaira for taking the time to share their planning and experiences on this beautiful to the Virgin Islands.
